Why do people change when they become popular?

My friends and I were always well known, we weren't losers but we weren't the best kids in the school. Over the past month, my friends and I spent a day in New York. We all got new har cuts, styles and some of us got piercings. We arrived back at school and everyone wanted to talk to us. I thought it was normal, who doesn't talk to you when you change something about you? Anyways, after almost a week of this we all got together and realized that we were the 'it' girls. Honestly, I hate having ALL the attention on me. Since [I'm not trying to sound snobbish] my dad piad for everything that we had done, I'm like the popular one. I hate it! All my friends have changed, they don't allow themselves to talk to 'losers' or 'nerds' and I feel like I'm the only one who is myself... should I do something about it? Or just leave the group?
