Xbox- please help?

okay, when i on the thing, a red frame screen comes on. it says xc changer -xc os for xbox 1.0-1.6 and than boot original bios, boot bank a and b, advanced menu below it. its just there on the screen and nothing happens. i have tried every possible thing. someone said that i have to upgrade it, how do i do that and one more thing, do you think that there is something wrong with the controller(duke original). what are the fittings for the controller. i also placed a game in it and the xbox did not play it. what to do. this is my very fist xbox. my relative brought it from overseas and there is no instructions with it. please help.
