How to make a relationship work with very different backgrounds?

You've got to do what you think is best for you. In all honesty, if you know your relationship is not going to go anywhere seriously, why keep it going any longer, because the longer you're w/him the more attached you'll get, the more it w/hurt when you do break it off. You know it can't be anything serious because of all the things you've got going against you, so I'd think if you really don't want to get hurt badly, now would be the best time to do it. Why drag it on when it's inevitable & w/only hurt more. Common sense tells you that. So you could just have a serious talk to him, let him know it's not him personally, just that all the cirstances are too against you both & you don't want either one of you hurting if you can help it. He'll no doubt agree w/you. That to me would be the mature logical thing to me..I wish you the best & Happy Holidays...:)
