Is grinding on pushrod guide plates ok? they wont clear!

I just bought a set of AFR 205 heads to put on my ford 351 Windsor stroker. i just realized that the pushrod guide plates are terrible! the push rods are unable to sit straight because the slot in the guide plate forces them over! i have heard of this problem happening before on these heads, but now i need to do something about it. is it ok to just grind the plates until the push rods clear? to be honest, i dont really even understand the purpose of guide plates, other than to ist in embly and offer a solid base for the rocker studs on aluminum heads. i dont have a problem grinding on the plates, as long as i know it wont damage something. i appreciate the help!
